Why do my indicators flash 8 or 9 times when I open/lock my Mitsubishi Colt CZ1?

I have a Mitsubishi Colt CZ1 5 door and for the past few months now whenever I open my car or lock it the indicators flash 8 or 9 times rather than the usual once or twice. As I had a yellow engine warning light appear on my dashboard and advised this could be to do with my battery I assumed it could have been the problem with my indicators also.

Today I replaced the battery which was 5 years old anyway and for a while it seemed to do the trick, however, a couple of hours after replacing the battery the indicators were back to flashing 8 or 9 times as before. I am hoping though this has resolved the warning light issue.

Has anyone come across this problem before and have they been able to fix the problem. I hope someone can get back to me with a resolution to this as we have to keep checking the doors are locked as the flashing occurs both when we open and lock the door so we are unsure if the car is locked or not. Thankfully it does lock the doors and opens them OK but it is just annoying that we still need to check them.

Many thanks

Andrew
I answer to Steve x2’s answer, unfortunately I don’t have an alarm on the car. I did have the warning light checked out a couple of times and the results showed it could be a problem with the throttle sensor so I don’t think the indicators are related to that. As it probably isn’t to so with the throttle issue nor do i have an alarm fitted I am kind of stuck
