how to play xbox live with softmodded xbox 360?

so i have a non modded xbox 360 (no chips no software in it) and i play on live like every day 7 to 9 hours each day but the thing is that aloot of my friends have like a punch of games alooooot of games (its on their gamer profile) and i only have like 8 games (all new games from 2008 till present) like halo reach cod black ops and mw2 farcry 2 and wet bulletstorm and the rest is like cool but kinda bored playing them all over bcz i can’t like buy a 50 $ game evey 3 or 6 days so i was on a party last night on xbox live playing halo reach with my fnds and one of them he has like a huge gamer score of 20440 points and i asked him how could you afford all those game(93 games in total) he said do you thing i buy those so expansive games with 50 to 60 $ price range i said i guess ya bcz that’s wht im doing he said that’s bcz you a dump ass i said y he replied i had my xbox 360 softmodded i asked him doesn’t that get you banned or some thing he said i had softmodded not hardmodded(modchip) i said if you softmodded you xbox 360 it wont get you banned he said no as long as you don’t upgrade every thing you see it won’t so now im wondering can i do this actually and not get banned plzzzz help i really really need it
