Do you think Jessica Alba represents the image of latinas?

ching chong asked:
By image, I mean physical appearance. Or are latinas much more beautiful than she is? I don’t know, because I’m not really around them that much so I was curious. I know that there were some things that Jessica Alba said about not being identified with latinas, but please answer this unbiased.

I think Jessica Alba is gorgeous. But I don’t know if I’d say she represents the image of Latinas. There are other Latina celebrities.

Well, there is a large amount of diversity among the Latina population, so is it really fair to ask if one woman is THE image for all of them? I do think she is beautiful, and represents part of that spectrum, yes, but to expect her to be an icon for a whole large group of very different women is not fair to her or Latinas in general.
Personally, I think many Latinas are just as or more beautiful, and who are perhaps more willing to stand up and be identified as Latina or be involved in projects that promote consciousness (Salma Hayek, for one). But I’m not mad or resentful that Alba doesn’t. She’s just an actress, and being a role model or political activist is not in her job description. That’s okay, she’s pretty and a performer, and she has a right to be only those things if she wants.

She should be recognized as a positive role model because she has successfully crossed over into movie characters where her background is not specifically Latina… she encompasses women in general… huge accomplishment considering others have difficulty being accepted outside of Latina roles… most are only cast in Latina characters… Alba does it all… to say other Latina’s are more attractive is ridiculous and envious
