Where are all the Asian American female pop singers at?
Asian American male singers and groups are gaining popularity but how come Asian American female singers aren’t as successful? There’s like Far East Movement, Steve Aoki, the dj in Linkin Park, Jin… There are like no popular Asian American female singers. tila tequila does not count! I actually think K pop and J pop artists are more popular here, not that that’s bad, but yeah…
Miserable Angel- It matters to me as an Asian American female. Growing up, I had no media role model to look up to really. I’m out of college now and I’m still surprised at the lack of Asian American female presence in pop music in the US. Just imagine being a young Asian American girl for a moment… how would you feel seeing all your friends being represented through various pop singers who are African American, Latina, Caucasian, etc. except for you. Seeing someone like you on TV, in magazines, etc. is actually really comforting. When I was a little girl, I took the lack of seeing other girls like me in the media as nonacceptance.
