Is it just me or are people getting dumber?

I am graduate in biological sciences and started working a environmental lab firm… but it seems as soon as I left the university or my workplace, I get surrounded by mediocre thinkers, people who can’t think for themselves and are focused on distractions like drugs, celebrity news, american idol, sex, etc… Another thing i realized at how people are completely illiterate when it comes to money, and are living like slaves for there jobs? WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?
