If I stack multiple neodymium magnets together, will it increase magnetism?

If I stack multiple neodymium magnets together, will it increase magnetism?

And if the magnet’s bigger does it mean that the magnetism’s better?
Thanks.

Magnet containment box?

by Jessica on Nov.21, 2011, under Earth Magnets

Magnet containment box?

I have 2 absolutely enormous neodymium magnet disc, grade N52. Their diameter is 8 inches, and height is 2.5 inches. I normally have to keep them about 5 meters away from anything, just to be safe. Again, as I have 2 of these, I keep them at different points in the house. I would like to be able to store them together. Is there any way to actually block the magnetic field, or bend it?

creating flight with magnets ?

creating flight with magnets ?

if I took a container and put one strong neodymium magnet on the top but inside the container and the south pole facing down and another STRONGER and bigger neodymium on the bottom but inside the container and the south pole facing up so both magnets are repelling, if I mechanically moved the bottom stronger magnet up towards the slightly less powerfully other magnet… would the whole unit ( container) lift ?

Do all magnets require rare earth minerals?

by Jessica on Jul.06, 2011, under Earth Magnets

Do all magnets require rare earth minerals?

China supplies >90% of rare earth metals. However china is thinking about limiting the amount of rare earth metals it exports.

My question is, Can magnets be made without the need of rare earth metals. Even if they are not as strong as rare earth magnets, is it still possible to make magnets with other metals or elements besides rare earth metals?

*P.S. – Anything besides electromagnets.

I’m thinking of building my own, for better performance.

How can I survive living with my dad for the next 4 years.?

How can I survive living with my dad for the next 4 years.?

I know that I do not have the worst family in the world, and am fortunate to have a bed, a roof, and food. My dad and mother are strange and seem bi polar at times. I am a teenager about to graduate middle school and have recently taken a slump in my grades. For the first three marking periods, I was excelling in each class with straight A’s. During this fourth marking period, however, I am not doing as well as I hoped. My goal was to start and hit the ground running, but I tripped on an untied shoe-lace. I fell and my grades started to plummet rapidly. Recently, I have been working on improving my grades; I am handing in late assignments and discussing how I can improve my grade with my teachers as well as parents.
Tonight I decided to talk to my parents about the situation, and how I was trying to improve my grades, and they suddenly snapped. My mother, who is usually supportive (she got me to pursue fencing as a sport) started to talk to my dad in a very low voice. When I am finished making up my late work I start to head to my room, when my dad calls me down. My mother decides to immediately avoid the situation by going away to her room for the night. As soon as she leaves, my father (who I will refer to as Mark, because I have lost all respect I once had for him and can’t imagine him being a fatherly figure) and I start discussing my grades and how I was going to improve my grades. Out of nowhere, he snaps at me and starts screaming at me and throwing the “F” bomb everywhere. I wasn’t surprised, and proceeded to call him something relating to a donkey, and stormed out of the house. Unfortunately, in the town I live in, curfew is at 9:00 PM and any “child” who is in the streets, will immediately be brought home. Knowing this, all I could do was wait at the end of my long driveway until Mark came to find me. I was brought back home and, surprisingly, apologized to. But, this is the usual crap I get from my dad. He will lose his temper, scream at me, stomping on all of my futile attempts of standing up for myself, and then saying that he was “sorry” after wards, thus beginning the cycle again. I am fed up with this childish behavior that he possesses, and was wondering how I can bare living with him until I graduate high-school, and move out of the house to go to college.

P.S. I consider myself a smart teenager. I have entered, and nearly won, and Toshiba competition regarding future technology (our project was a space elevator that utilized photovoltaic arrays, neodymium magnets, and carbon nanotubes!) My mother and father were obviously not used to seeing me struggle in classes that I feel are mundane. I think my grades slipping were due to an enormous amount of stress, over a week of combined absences, and depression. Also, I know my dad is not the worst dad in the world, and am (some-what) fortunate to have him provide for the family(along with my mom, who works as well)

Can I use steel instead of iron for the core of an electromagnet?

by Jessica on Apr.23, 2011, under Earth Magnets

Can I use steel instead of iron for the core of an electromagnet?

building an electromagnet and when using a steel nail or screw the nail becomes magnetised but does not become completely polar since a rare earth magnet still attracts to both ends of the nail, the coil itsself works fine but i need more powerfull magnet for wat i am doing.
